Best Albums of 2013

Welcome to the 7th (and hopefully not the last) OngakuBaka Top 10 albums of the year list. Before we jump right in to our picks, we’ll explain the guidelines for the selection process.

 1. These records are in no particular order.

2. No live records, “Best of” collections, box sets, or re-issues. The albums chosen had to be material released in 2013.

 3. This is a collaborative effort between the two of us, and if we didn’t agree that an album deserved to make the cut, it didn’t make the list.

 4. There are plenty of full-lengths we never got a chance to listen to, forgot about, or never had time to fully digest, so don't freak out if you don't see your personal favorite in our list.

With that said, here are our honorable mentions for 2013:

White Hills - So You Are... So You'll Be
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light
Thee Oh Sees - Floating Coffin
Run the Jewels - s/t
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Apparat - Krieg und Frieden

And now, without further ado, our top 10 records of 2013:

1. Psychic Ills - One Track Mind

2. Deerhunter - Monomania

3. Future of the Left - How to Stop Your Brain in an Accident

4. Wild Moth - Over, Again

5. Suuns - Images Du Futur

6. Jamaican Queens - Wormfood

7. Pissed Jeans - Honeys

8. Fuzz - s/t

9. My Bloody Valentine - m b v

10. Foxygen - We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic

Basic Cable - I'm Good to Drive

Chicago's Basic Cable features ex members of Loose Dudes and Heavy Times as well as current members of Runners. I'm Good to Drive is a quick blast of apathetic, working class punk rock with a biting sense of humor in the spirit of The Jesus Lizard and Pissed Jeans. You can stream Basic Cable's first single "Blonde Ambition" below. Keep an eye out for a limited vinyl album release on Permanent Records in the near future.

VIDEO: The Don Darlings - Noose 'round My Neck

My blog-laziness has hit new lows over the last few months, and our inbox is officially overflowing. After deleting countless emails based on subject line alone, this was the first submission I decided to open, and it's definitely not what I expected to hear. The Don Darlings are a spirit-plunging "Dark Americana" band from Sweden with a s/t record coming in November on Alleycat Records. Worth checking out.

The Conquerors - s/t

Swirling, overdriven, psychedelic ear candy out of Kansas City filled with excellent bassline riffs, Hendrix-style wah, and the occasional Acid Mothers Temple-sized reverb. Thanks to Brad for bringing this one to my attention.

Wild Decade - Conductor

Wild Decade (formerly Bad Bibles) are the independent music world's premiere transcontinental post punk band. Musically, the group juggles an angular dissonance reminiscent of Pacific Northwest greats Unwound with a keen sense of melody. Very few bands outside of the Pixies can strike a convincing balance between menacing aggression and traditional pop songs. Wild Decade manages to pull it off effortlessly for most of Conductor. The album is currently streaming on Bandcamp and Spotify for free and can be purchased on Amazon and iTunes.

VIDEO: The Future Primitives - Have You Been To Mars

"Have You Been to Mars" is a brand new stop motion music video for Cape Town garage rockers, The Future Primitives. The video is impressive-- even more so after reading the creator did everything using Windows Movie Maker. If you dig this track, head over to The Future Primitive's Bandcamp page for a free download of their latest album Songs We Taught Ourselves. The record is also available on vinyl courtesy of Casbah Records

V.A. - 2013 Parquet Courts Mixtape

Last week I received a package forwarded from my old address, and inside was a mixtape from the guys in Parquet Courts. I'm guessing this is the same tape being sent out to fans who pre-order the band's new EP Tally All the Things That You Broke. It's rare these days that a band offers up something like this to their fans, and even more rare that they include a phone number to call. So go ahead and rock out then call up the band and tell them how fucking rad they are. I didn't need another reason to love Parquet Courts but now I just want to give them a big hug. As always, if you dig what you hear make sure you do some googling, buy some records and support the bands.

Thee Hugs - Drug Use & Alcohol Abuse

Thee Hugs are a rowdy drunken trio out of Brisbane that produces their own brand of grimy surf punk. Wild Moth - Over, Again

I just finished a cross country move to Milwaukee and have spent every waking moment unpacking, drinking, and pissing off my neighbors by blasting Over, Again at peak volume. I fell in love with Wild Moth's Mourning Glow EP last year, and I had lofty expectations for their debut LP. Good sweet lord did these guys ever deliver. Wild Moth is a post-punk band in an era where "post punk" is so broadly defined the term has become essentially meaningless. Over, Again gives the sub-genre context and life again. It's the perfect fusion of raw energy and nuanced beauty. Over, Again is the sound of a bunch of punk rockers deciding to grow up and move forward instead of stagnating or quitting. This is the same concept that gave us Mission of Burma, Fugazi, Wire, and dozens of other great bands. If you're looking for an early contender for album of the year, this is it.

Check out Wild Moth on their current west coast tour and stream Over, Again below:

VIDEO: Lil Daggers - Jazz Tom

Miami's Lil Daggers have a new cassette coming on September 10th entitled No Pizza No Peace on Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records. It sounds as if the band has further perfected their brooding psychedelic garage sound on this 5 track EP. You can pre-order your copy over at bandcamp, and be sure to check out the first track while you're there. If you're not completely sold after hearing that one, I'm not sure what else I can do for you.

Alien Trilogy - s/t

Fractured and noisy synth-punk no-wave out of Brooklyn. Their Devo/Nervous Gender-inspired circuit bent sound has some moments that also reminded me quite a bit of Black Eyes (particularly "Black Market Tubetop Salesman"). Download the entire album for freeeeee over at bandcamp.

Haunted Leather - In Her Golden Room

Haunted Leather's newest EP dropped (on bandcamp) a few weeks back, and it's pretty fucking great. Can't recommend these guys enough. In Her Golden Room sees the band upping the tempo and vocal reverb ever so slightly compared to last year's Red Road, and a few of the tracks might even have you convinced you've just discovered a long-lost Black Angels record. Textbook psych tunes. Cassette coming soon on Cheap Miami (says July 10th, but where dey at?), and preorders of the 10" vinyl are available at Stolen Body Records

Astral Gunk - str8 up jAMES DEAN

These guys absolutely killed it last night at Strange Matter w/ Ttotals & Ancient River. Super loud and snotty garage/punk/psych out of Sackville, New Brunswick. Cassette courtesy of Nervous Service Records. Make sure to check out their s/t cassette from last year as well.

Tales of Murder and Dust - Skeleton Flowers

This new EP from Denmark's Tales of Murder and Dust might be one of the better things you'll hear this year. Mixing elements of shoegaze and dark psychedelia, this Denmark sextet is able to create such an ethereal sound that you'll question whether it's all just a hallucination. If you haven't checked out their previous releases yet, they're all offered up as "name your price" downloads over at bandcamp. Don't overlook this one.

Shape Breaker - Eyes Wide

A few years back I posted Shape Breaker's No Fun LP. No Fun was loud and maybe a little unfocused, but clearly Shape Breaker had a strong foundation to build on. Holy shit did they ever build. Their 2013 followup record Eyes Wide is fan-fucking-tastic and is probably the best album of 2013 you haven't heard. Eyes Wide, like its predecessor, is a smorgasbord of lo-fi, psych, and garage but doesn't lean on any one particular influence too much. The production and songwriting has gone from endearingly sloppy to downright impressive as well. If I had the chance I'd kiss their lead guitar player on the mouth or probably just buy him a beer. The solos on this record fucking rip and have that rare Dinosaur Jr. quality of being an integral part of every composition without actually sounding like they're ripping off Dinosaur Jr. Anyway, I love this record and I love this band. Give them all of your money.

VIDEO: Piresian Beach - Baby Disorder

An appropriately psyched-out video for Piresian Beach's searing track, "Baby Disorder", from her split 7" with JC Satan out on RNR666 Records (check out the JC Satan side over at their bandcamp). It's been out since January, so I'm not sure how many of the 250 total copies remain, so don't sleep on this one. Pick it up HERE.

WatchOut! - Flashbacker

Originally a super limited lathe-cut LP back in 2011, Permanent Records has given Flashbacker a fresh pressing of 500 copies. According to the press release, "Flashbacker includes seven tracks of 60's Brazilian psych, 70's German hypnotism, 80s UK fuzz pop, and Indian raga influenced jams." This Chilean group is about to be on a lot more people's psychedelic radar. Grab a copy when it hits the Permanent Records shop tomorrow.

Electric Citizen - Demo

The Electric Citizen/Haunted Leather tour rolled through Richmond last Thursday night. Their original venue apparently fell through, which resulted in a last minute house show on VCU's campus. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect crowd-wise, and was almost certain it would get shut down, given its location. Electric Citizen kicked off the evening with an incredible set of Sabbath-like scorchers that absolutely blew the minds of the many students who were unfamiliar with the bands before entering the party. The looks on some of their faces were almost as enjoyable as the set itself. Overall, it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable show-going experiences I've had in quite some time, and felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to not only see them in a living room setting, but to also get a little weird with them in the process. You'll be hearing plenty more from them soon, with two 7inchers and a cassette on the way, but for now you can check out their 2 track demo via the bandcamp stream below.

Tingle In The Netherlands - Why Can't You Write Something Nice For A Change

Tingle In The Netherlands answers the age old question of "What would Glass Candy sound like if they sang about dicks?". Dark 80's synth music with absurd, surreal lyrics and guaranteed to please/confuse all of the guests at your next dance party. "Prostitute's Handbag" is a free download, and the rest of the album is available in both digital and physical form via Bandcamp.

Moonrises - Frozen Altars

Had a chance to catch a great set by Moonrises at a free in-store at Steady Sounds here in Richmond, VA last Thursday afternoon. Moonrises is the latest project of Steve Krakow, a.k.a Plastic Crimewave, and their organ-ic avant psychedelia LSD trips are sure to vaporize your already-melted minds. For fans of Fifty Foot Hose, Silver Apples, Faust, Can, etc. If you haven't checked out their sophomore record, Frozen Altars, here's your chance to finally do so. Stream the whole thing below, and pick up the LP, which has sounded most excellent on my turntable for the last week, for $15 over at Captcha Records' bandcamp.

Florida garage punker Waylon Thornton is back with what seems to be his 1,000th release in the last few years. VIDEO PREMIERE: Lord Scrummage - We All Need Honey

EDIT: YouTube hates boobs and/or products made by bees so they took the video down. Vimeo to the rescue.

The video for "We All Need Honey" is a madcap mishmash of psychedelia, stop motion, hand drawn animation, and honey. A metric shit-ton of honey. Seriously. It all comes together like the sort of spring break LSD nightmare that would make Harmony Korine blush. I absolutely love these guys, and if you haven't gotten the chance to check out their New American Noise segment, you're missing out. After that, head over to the official Lord Scrummage bandcamp page and grab a copy of their latest album Triangle or Die for the low price of whatever the hell you feel like paying. If you're into fearless experimentation, boundless creativity, and shakin' your ass, Lord Scrummage won't disappoint.

Cuntz - Aloha

Cuntz are 4 slimey fucks from Melbourne, Australia that bring the noise in the ugliest fashion possible. It's loud and confrontational sludge-punk, and if you don't like it, they certainly don't give a fuck. For fans of Pissed Jeans, Total Control, Big Black, Flipper, and the like. Mastered by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring. This debut LP got a Record Store Day exclusive pressing from Permanent Records, and you can stream the whole thing below, or pick up one of the 21 remaining copies over at bandcamp.

Red Traces - Once Were [Single]

An email with the title "Some Twin Peak-ish kind of shoegaze" is certain to "peak" the interest of anyone, but I was pleased to hear that it's an incredibly appropriate description. A beautiful and paranoia-inducing drug led by L.A.-based musician Albert Ovadia. Only two tracks so far, both available as a free download, with a full length nearing completion. Excited to hear more.

VIDEO PREMIERE: The Group Sound - Romantic Notions

"Romantic Notions" is the first single from The Group Sound's forthcoming album and you lucky Ongakubaka reading bastards are getting the WORLD PREMIERE of the music video. I feel Like Carson Daly circa 1998 right now. This song is a nice little slice of hazy, dreamy, psychedelic pop goodness-- the perfect jam to usher in some warm weather. The band's second album, also titled Romantic Notions, is dropping this month, and if the rest of the record is half as good as this single I'll definitely have it heavy rotation.

For more info, check out The Group Sound's Facebook and their bandcamp page.
